The Thai government is reported to have begun to take steps towards legalized online gambling, aiming to regulate the previously uncontrolled sector.
A new initiative seeks to curb illegal activities, foster responsible gambling and open up new economic opportunities. Legalization will create a transparent framework, offering safety and clarity for operators and participants.
The government intends to replace the chaotic underground market with a legal framework that includes strict guidelines for operators and clear taxation rules, with some revenue dedicated to public welfare projects.
The plan will affect various platforms, from poker to online sports betting, and distinguishes itself from the approved land-based Entertainment Complex Bill.
Operators will be required to meet regulatory standards and declare all income for taxation. Participants will gain access to secure legal platforms that protect their rights as the government seeks to address illegal gambling by offering a lawful alternative.
Prasert Chantorongthong, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Digital Economy & Society, says: “The collaboration between the Digital Economy & Society Ministry and other agencies is crucial.”
The process of initiating the legislative process requires amendments and is expected to take approximately one month.
