The Netherlands’ gambling regulator, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), is offering the industry a fresh cooperative approach but warns of potential severe measures, including a complete advertisement ban, if compliance is not improved.
Renske Fikkers, Head of KSA’s Regulatory Department, made this announcement at the Gaming in Holland Conference.
Fikkers discussed KSA’s new ‘Regulator 2.0’ strategy aimed at fostering a more open and adaptable regulatory environment to address key sector issues, saying: “We understand that imposed measures sometimes require adaptability.
“Being able to have an open conversation about that helps us further strengthen our regulation.”
Fikkers also highlighted the need for strict adherence to advertising rules, noting that frequent infractions might lead to a total advertising ban, which the KSA finds undesirable.
The conference also highlighted calls from the Dutch trade body VNLOK for greater involvement from tech companies and banks in combating illegal gambling.
Björn Fuchs, VNLOK’s Chief, emphasized the role of tech giants like Google and Facebook, urging them to stop facilitating black market activities.
Arjan Blok, CEO of Nederlandse Loterij, echoed similar sentiments, advocating for increased powers for the KSA to blacklist illegal sites and enforce stricter measures, adding: “Together we have the same interest: combating illegal gambling sites.”
