Gustaf Hoffstedt, Secretary General of the Swedish Trade Association for Online Gambling (BOS), argues that private casino operators could have revitalized a Swedish land-based market that had become devoid of both competition and innovation.
The Swedish parliament’s decision to close land-based casinos follows declining profitability and visitor numbers, as highlighted by Casino Cosmopol CEO, Ola Enquist, who notes that the rise of online gambling has significantly impacted the performance of physical venues.
From January 1st, 2025, land-based casinos will be prohibited in Sweden, a move that Hoffstedt believes could fuel the black market.
He suggests that private operators could introduce much-needed innovation and offer a unique experience to Sweden’s gambling ecosystem, saying: “I believe land-based casinos could be profitable in cities like Stockholm, Malmö and Gothenburg if they were open to private operators.”
Moreover, he believes that maintaining a land-based sector could benefit online suppliers, adding: “Companies like Evolution partner with land-based casinos, which adds authenticity to their online offerings.”
